Horse coat colors: names, pictures and how to tell them apart

Seventeen horse colors explained in plain words: what each one looks like, the simple genetics behind it, which breeds have it and how to tell similar colors apart. Russian names are given too, for readers of Russian books and breed standards.

Find the color in four questions

  1. Black mane, tail and lower legs?
Then it is bay or seal brown (tan patches on an almost black body). A sandy body means buckskin, and a sandy body with a dorsal stripe means bay dun.
  2. Black all over?
Black. A mouse-grey body with a black stripe along the back is grullo (mouse dun).
  3. No black anywhere?
Chestnut or the darker liver chestnut. A golden body with a white mane is palomino; a dark body with a light mane is flaxen chestnut and silver; a pale red body with a darker stripe is red dun.
  4. White hairs, patches or spots?
Getting lighter every year: grey. White hairs on the body but a dark head: roan. Large patches: pinto (piebald and skewbald). Small spots: leopard spotted (Appaloosa). Cream with pink skin: cremello and perlino; snow-white from birth: white.

Questions and answers

What is the most common horse color?

Bay: a brown body with a black mane, tail and lower legs. It appears in almost every breed.

What is the rarest horse color?

True white (dominant white) is one of the rarest. Leopard spotting, cremello and some silver shades are also uncommon outside specific breeds.

What is the difference between a grey and a white horse?

A grey is born dark and turns white with age; its skin stays dark. A true white is white from birth and has pink skin.

How many horse colors are there?

There are three base colors (bay, black and chestnut). Genes for dilution, greying and spotting turn them into dozens of shades. This page covers the seventeen best-known ones.

What color is a hobby horse?

Any! Hobby horse makers use the same color names as real horses, so a «bay» or «palomino» hobby horse looks like a real horse of that color.
