Simple genetics

A chestnut has no black pigment in its coat. It is a recessive trait, so two chestnut parents usually have a chestnut-based foal.

How to tell it apart

Unlike a bay, a chestnut has no black in the mane or tail. A very light mane on a red body is a flaxen chestnut; a golden body with a white mane is a palomino.

Did you know?

Don and Budyonny horses are most often chestnut with a golden sheen.
