Horse colors
Roan (Чалая in Russian): white hairs evenly mixed through the body, with a noticeably darker head. Fairly uncommon.
| Russian name | Чалая |
|---|---|
| Shades | bay roan, blue roan, red (strawberry) roan |
| Body | white hairs evenly mixed through the body, with a noticeably darker head |
| Mane and tail | the base color, with no white hairs |
| Legs | dark lower legs |
| With age | barely changes, only with the seasons: darker in winter, lighter in summer |
| How common | fairly uncommon |
The roan gene mixes white hairs into the body coat from birth. The head, mane and legs keep the base color.
The key difference from grey: a roan has a dark head and does not lighten year after year.
When a roan is scratched, the hair often grows back dark without white; these spots are called «corn marks».
What to use: heathered (speckled) fleece or plush with a dark head and mane. Free hobby horse pattern →
