Several genes create white patches: tobiano (patches cross the back), overo (white along the belly and sides) and sabino (white legs and face).
Unlike a leopard-spotted horse, a pinto has large patches rather than small spots. A black-and-white pinto is called piebald, other colors skewbald.
The American Paint Horse is a breed of Quarter Horse type with pinto markings. Pintos are also common among Tinkers and Icelandic horses.
What to use: white plush with brown or black fleece patches appliquéd on, and a two-tone mane. Free hobby horse pattern →
