CHOOSING & FITTING
Hobby horse blankets and rugs: sizing, fastenings and care
A hobby horse blanket or rug is a fabric accessory for a toy. It creates a look, may cover part of the fabric during carrying and can complete a tack set. A toy does not need a live horse’s temperature regulation: choose a practical shape and fit rather than warmth claims alone.
Blanket, neck cover and saddle pad
A blanket covers the part of the toy’s neck or body it is designed for; a neck cover extends coverage around the neck or head. A saddle pad goes under a toy saddle on a compatible model. They are not interchangeable. Many hobby horses consist only of a head on a stick, so first establish which toy shape the accessory fits.
One-piece design or detachable neck cover
A detachable part lets you change the look and clean pieces separately, but adds fastenings. For example, LarDen lists a Bluebell blanket with a removable neck cover. That confirms the option exists, not that it fits every hobby horse. Check where the fasteners sit and whether your usual grip remains clear.
Which dimensions to compare
A is the coverage length along the upper edge. B is the side drop from the upper edge to the bottom. C is the fastening range around the section being wrapped. A neck cover also needs an opening and fastening diagram. The illustration shows measuring directions, not a sewing pattern; manufacturers define points for their own designs.
Fit before movement
Try the blanket without jumping first. Fabric should not cover your grip, wind around the stick or hang into your foot space. Check that fastenings stay closed while carrying and turning. A decorative photo outfit may be awkward during exercise; remove unnecessary pieces before active training.
Fabric and protecting the toy
Thick fabric and a soft lining do not prove waterproofing. Unless rain protection is specified, do not use a blanket instead of a dry carrying bag. Check edges and hook-and-loop closures: the rough side should not catch the mane or head fabric. Do not enclose a damp toy in a tight cover.
Cleaning and building a set
Follow the particular product’s care label. Remove metal parts if the design allows it and close hook-and-loop fastenings before any permitted wash. Dry the blanket separately from the hobby horse. Matching colours can come later: correct dimensions, suitable fastenings and unobstructed use matter first.
Frequently asked questions
Will a toy pony blanket fit a hobby horse?
Not necessarily. Toy bodies and necks differ. Compare shape, dimensions and attachment points.
Is every blanket a raincoat?
No. The maker must specify water protection; appearance alone does not establish it.
Is a blanket needed in competitions?
Do not assume a universal requirement. Check your class rules and ensure the accessory does not obstruct movement.
